Abstract
Fahira Sal Sabila, 2020; The Effect of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Characteristics on The Firm Performance (Study on Banking Firms Listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange in The Period of 2010-2018). Undergraduate Thesis, Jakarta. Bachelor Degree of Management, Faculty of Economics, State University of Jakarta. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) characteristics on the firm performance of banking firms listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange period of 2010-2018. Independent variables used in this study are CEO characteristics that consist of CEO gender, CEO tenure, CEO age, CEO education, CEO nationality, CEO ownership, and CEO origin. Dependent variable used in this study is firm performance which is measured with Return on Asset (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and Net Interest Margin (NIM). This study also uses control variables including board of commissioner size, board of director size the proportion of foreign commissioner, the proportion of independent commissioner, firm size, firm growth, dividend policy, and firm age. The data used in this study is taken from annual report of banking firms that are listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange during 2010-2018. The sampling method of this study is purposive sampling. The research model used is unbalanced panel data with Fixed Effect Model approach. The results obtained from this research are 1) CEO gender has significant effect on ROA and CAR 2) CEO age has significant effect on ROA, CAR, and NIM, 3) CEO ownership has positive and significant effect on ROE and CAR, 4) CEO origin has negative and significant effect on CAR. This research supports stewardship theory, agency theory, the upper echelons theory, and corporate governance.
