Abstract
In this study, the authors investigate the relationship of business risk, liquidity, company's growth, and tangibility asset directly to leverage and profitability, then investigate indirect relationship among those variables to profitability through leverage as moderating variable. Previous studies investigate the factors that determine leverage or the factors that determine profitability in separate research. This research tried to combine those two researches from previous research through path analysis. Researchers use Total Debt to Total Assets as leverage's proxy and use Return on Asset as the proxy of profitability. The research use financials data from manufactures companies in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. There are 88 manufacturing companies from Indonesia, 60 manufacturing companies from Malaysia and 59 manufacturing companies from Thailand that selected as the samples of the research based on purposive sampling method. The results show leverage able to intermediating tangibility asset and liquidity to profitability of Indonesian and Thailand manufactures companies but unable show same result for Malaysian manufactures companies. The empirical result show varying effect on the independent variables to dependent variables in those three countries. The result of research depends on the characteristics of each country.
