Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the differences of motivating factors for employees of Gen X and Gen Y that have implications for intergenerational conflicts. From the academic side, this research will add empirical study related to generational theory and work motivation theory in human resource management especially in human resource management in public sector in Indonesia. In terms of practice, this research will provide an overview of the challenges and changes facing public sector organizations in managing human resources, especially Generation Y, which will enter the managerial level and leadership soon.. Using Structural Equation Model based on Herzberg Two Factor Theory, confirmed that indicators of motivator factor and hygiene factor can be a determinant of conflict in the Ministry of Finance. Furthermore, there are differences in indicators of motivator factor and hygiene factor in generation X and generation Y. For Hygiene Factor, working condition factor and work security factor is a significant factor in Gen X employees. While in Gen Y employee, relation with supervisor factor is a factor most significant. Finally, there is a difference in the relationship path between the two Herzberg Theory variables to the conflict. In Gen X, the pathway of relationships occurring from Motivator Factor is positively correlated to Hygiene Factor, which is then negatively correlated to the conflict. The opposite occurs in Gen Y. The pathway of the relationship starts from the Hygiene Factor which is positively correlated to the Motivator Factor directly, which then negatively correlates to the conflict. Differences in indicators and path between variables affecting conflicts indicate the need for differentiation of HR management strategies for generations X and Y generation as well as handling in managing workplace conflict. Keyword: workplace conflict, intergeneration conflict, motivation, motivator factor, hygiene factor
